Book of the Month: Discovering Faten, a Story of Courage, Dreams, and Freedom
Share
We are happy to announce the new Book of the Month from the LiLi Community! For July, we have chosen a powerful story, capable of moving people and provoking reflection. It is Faten, written by the multi-award-winning author Fatima Sharafeddine. If you are looking for a read that knows how to combine the strength of reality with the light of hope, this is the book for you.
Why We Have Chosen Faten
Faten is not only a novel, but an intimate and courageous journey. Set in Lebanon during the civil war, its protagonist is a fifteen-year-old girl forced to leave her village in the south of the country, as well as her studies and everything else she knows, to go work as a maid in Beirut.
We have selected this title first and foremost because it is an extraordinary example of resilience and hope. Despite the difficulties and a destiny that seems already written, the protagonist does not give up. Thanks to a meeting with a neighbor, she rediscovers friendship, finds the strength to pick up her books again, and starts fighting for her dreams once more, reminding us that it is always possible to keep the light burning even in the darkest moments. We believe that in complex times like the ones we are living through, rediscovering the values transmitted by this story is of primary importance.

Faten has been selected as the Book of the Month for July also because it fully embraces our vision. Its bilingual edition, with parallel text in Italian and Arabic, breaks down barriers. It is a precious opportunity for foreign citizens in Italy who wish to keep their roots alive, but also an inspiring bridge for those who want to approach the Arabic language. Thus, the value is mutual, offering the same double path to those who, starting from Arabic, want to practice Italian or vice versa.
Guiding us on this journey is the pen of Fatima Sharafeddine, one of the most important and esteemed voices in contemporary children’s literature. With over 120 books published and translated worldwide, the author boasts prestigious international awards, including the Bologna Ragazzi Award in 2016 and three nominations for the famous Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Her writing knows how to touch the deepest chords of the heart with a rare delicacy and truth.
