Born in Tangier in 1304, at the age of 21 Ibn Battuta decided to embark on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He then reached Jerusalem, visited Persia, Iraq, Yemen, and numerous countries in Asia and Africa, before returning to his homeland, Morocco, at the age of fifty. His fame is linked to his work Travels, an account of his extraordinary adventures and numerous encounters over the course of over thirty years traveling around the world.
