Ibn Majid (c. 1421–1500), nicknamed "The Lion of the Sea," was the most famous Arab navigator and one of the most important oceanographers and astronomers of the 15th century. Born in what is now the United Arab Emirates, he explored the Indian Ocean and mapped the coasts of Africa and Asia. His advice is said to have helped the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama reach India from Africa.
