This is a modern fairy tale with a profound political soul. The story begins with the death of a King, who leaves his daughter, the Princess, a challenging will: to become the rightful heir, she must bring the sun into the palace before the candles burn out. If she fails, she will be locked in a lonely tower forever. After several failed attempts to "capture" the sun, she learns through a wise old man that the "sun" is not an object to be caught, but a metaphor for collective clarity.
The Princess eventually realizes that she must have every citizen bring a small lantern to the palace walls. As thousands of people gather, their combined light becomes as bright as the sun, and the palace walls—symbolizing the barriers between the ruler and the people—literally melt away. It is a masterpiece of Resistance Literature disguised as a fable, teaching that true leadership is found in breaking down walls and merging with the light of the people.
Target Age: 7+ years
Author: Ghassan Kanafani (غَسَّان كَنَفَانِي)
While Kanafani is known for the "intense brevity" of his political novels, he wrote this book for a very tender reason: it was a birthday gift for his niece, Lamis Najim. He alos hand-illustrated it for her, wanting to provide Palestinian children with stories that were beautiful but also intellectually empowering.
Kanafani believed that children were the "future of the resistance." He felt that if a generation was to change their reality, they needed to be raised on literature that moved away from passive "happily ever afters" and toward collective action. He wrote for children to bridge the gap between the harsh reality of the refugee camps and the limitless potential of the human imagination. Sadly, Lamis was with Ghassan on the day of his assassination. They both passed away in the car bombing in Beirut, forever linking the author and the muse of this story.
