This novel is considered one of the most prominent literary works to address the issue of Palestinian displacement following the 1948 Nakba. Through it, Kanafani tells the story of three Palestinian men from different generations—Abu Qais, Assad, and Marwan—whose fates intertwine in a desperate journey toward Kuwait in search of a dignified life, far from the poverty and oppression imposed on them by the conditions of refuge.
The novel’s style is characterized by psychological depth and a meticulous analysis of its characters, allowing the reader to empathize with their suffering and aborted dreams. Furthermore, through dense symbolism, Kanafani reflects the sheer cruelty and injustice endured by Palestinians, highlighting their sacrifices and shattered dreams.
This novel is a resounding cry against injustice and oppression, and an invitation to reflect on the tragic fate of a people searching for a homeland and an identity in a world increasingly filled with injustice and alienation. It is truly a living testament to the tragedy of the Palestinian people and the power of literature to depict their reality and their struggle for freedom and dignity.
