In this book, first published in 1933, we follow the misadventures of a young man (Orwell himself) who, finding himself penniless, attempts to survive between Paris and London while experiencing the depths of poverty and hunger. In the French capital, after being robbed and seeing his only chance at income (giving English lessons) vanish, he finds himself toiling as a plongeur (dishwasher). Matters do not improve upon his return to England, lured by the promise of a job that ultimately proves to be non-existent.
An autobiographically inspired narrative where reality and imagination intertwine, the story blends a compelling narrative voice with a fierce critique of socio-economic dynamics. Orwell denounces these injustices with a loud voice—dynamics that, in many ways, remain alive even today.
